Community Participation ProjectThe purpose of the Community Participation Project is to facilitate the
involvement of the community in local decision making structures. The
project endeavours to meet this aim in both the Inner City Organisational
Network (ICON) (www.iconnet.ie) and
North West Inner City Network (NWICN) areas. It does this by supporting
community participation on the North Inner City Drugs Task Force, hosting
training and producing a Community
Training and Education Booklet as well as developing good practice
guidelines for participation. Participation and Practice of Rights ProjectThe Participation and Practice of Rights project consists of a coalition of organisations and groups working on social justice and poverty issues in Ireland, north and south. The project exists "to promote awareness of international human rights instruments and standards and support marginalised communities and groups to use them in accessing services and achieving equality."As such, this project aims to test and prove clear methods and skills that will enable communities and groups to have ownership of tools of rights and set their own definitions or indicators for the implementation of international standards in areas of health, education and housing. These indicators are relevant to the specific conditions of marginalized communities, and will be used to achieve improved access to the delivery of such services. The project is basically to equip community development work with a Rights based approach. For Further Information contact Tom Redmond at 8557207. Anti Racism and Diversity StrategyIn 2005 Dublin Inner City Partnership (www.dicp.ie) brought together a number of community groups to develop an Anti-Racism and Diversity Strategy for the Inner City. In spring of 2006 NWICN's Intercultural Working Group hosted 2 consultation meetings about this plan with over 50 people from 10 nationalities. The final draft of the plan is currently being drawn-up.Community SemiarsThe Network is planning to host 2 community seminars in Autumn of this year.Community Celebratory EventsThe Network Co-ordinator currently chairs the Aontas Youth Arts Initiative which is an initiative by youth service providers to develop a tradition of sustainable youth arts practice in the NWIC area. This is done by training up youth-workers, volunteers and young people in relevant skills and by using popular cultural events (like Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, Midsummers eve) to provide high profile events to bring the community together in an act of celebrating young people.Network AGMThe Network hosted its AGM last May 2006 which was attended by over 80
people. The Networks new Strategic Plan was also launched by Vincent Browne
at this event. A full download of the plan may be acquired on the Publications
section of the website. Community Policing ForumIn 2005 An Síol CDP and MACRO CDP approached the North West Inner City Network to look at how an integrated response to anti-social behaviour could be developed on an area-wide basis. The Network and the 2 CDPs have explored a number of options and have come to the conclusion that the setting up a Community Policing Forum in the North West Inner City is the most appropriate response to these issues. The Network is currently in negotiations with the Guards and Dublin City Council in relation to this matter.
